FiveM pure mode: why your mods aren't loading

If your mods don't load or you get a modified files error when joining a server, it's most likely pure mode. What it is, its two levels and what you can do about it.

Short answer

Pure mode is a server setting, sv_pureLevel, that blocks modified client files. If your mods are in the FiveM folder, on a server with pure mode they don’t load and you get no warning. If you’ve modified files in your GTA V install, FiveM gives you an error that tells you which file it is.

Each server decides whether to use it, and the right thing to do is respect that.

What is FiveM pure mode?

Pure mode is a protection that the server owner turns on with sv_pureLevel, not you: it makes sure every player joins with untouched game files. According to posts on the Cfx.re forum, a lot of servers turn it on because some modified files have been used to get an advantage in gunfights.

The FiveM documentation describes two levels:

Level What the documentation says What it means for you
1 “Blocks all modified client files except audio files and known graphics mods.” Sounds usually get through. Skins, citizens and BloodFX usually won’t load.
2 “Blocks all modified client files.” No mods load.
No pure mode No restrictions. Everything you’ve installed correctly loads.

The “known graphics mods” part confuses a lot of people. It only refers to an old mod signing system, and today there’s no current list of approved graphics mods. If someone tells you their citizen “gets past pure mode”, be suspicious.

The two symptoms

Your mods don’t show and nothing pops up

That’s what happens with mods that are in the FiveM folder, like the mods or citizen folder. On a server with pure mode they’re ignored: no error, they just don’t load. You get into the server, but the skin, the citizen or the blood look like the normal game.

Nothing’s broken. When you leave that server and join one without pure mode, your mods show up again (FiveM may ask you to restart when you switch).

You get a modified files error when joining

This happens when you’ve modified files in your GTA V install, not FiveM’s. For example, if at some point you dropped a mod straight into the game folder. When you join a server with pure mode, FiveM warns you with an error that tells you which file it is.

Before you touch anything

  • Make a backup. Copy the whole citizen folder and the mods folder somewhere outside FiveM. If you’re going to touch the GTA V folder, also save the files you’re going to change.
  • Check which FiveM you use. There are two now: FiveM Legacy and FiveM Enhanced. Further down we explain why that matters.

How to fix the modified files error

  1. Read the warning calmly and write down the name of the file it shows.
  2. Close FiveM completely.
  3. Find that file in your GTA V install folder. If you changed it when installing a mod, put the original back from your backup.
  4. If you don’t have a backup, use the option to verify or repair the game files in the launcher where you have GTA V (Steam, Epic Games or Rockstar Games Launcher). That puts the original files back.
  5. Join the server again.

So it doesn’t happen again: FiveM mods go in the FiveM folder, never in the GTA V folder. That way, on a server with pure mode the worst that can happen is that they don’t show, but you can still get in. Every folder is explained in the FiveM mods folder guide.

What to do if your mods don’t load

If there’s no error and your mods just don’t show, it’s most likely pure mode doing its job. You have two options:

  • Play on that server without mods. You don’t need to delete them: they get ignored on their own.
  • Play with your mods on the servers that do allow them.

If you want to know what to expect from each type of mod: citizens, skins and BloodFX are graphics mods, so they usually won’t load at any pure mode level. Sound packs are audio, and on level 1 they usually get through.

How to tell if a server uses pure mode

There’s no official indicator in the FiveM server browser that tells you whether a server uses pure mode (at least, we haven’t found one). You have to find out some other way:

  1. Read the server’s rules. Many servers have their own Discord with rules and FAQs. If it’s not there, ask the staff whether they allow client mods.
  2. Watch for the restart prompt. Changing pure mode level forces a client restart, and FiveM warns you first. If a server asks you to restart when you join and the message mentions pure mode, that server uses a different level from the one you had.
  3. Test it. Join with a visual mod and a sound pack installed. If you can see and hear both, there’s usually no pure mode. If you only hear the sound, it’s probably level 1. If neither loads, it’s probably level 2.

FiveM Enhanced: pure mode, always

On FiveM Enhanced, the FiveM for GTA V Enhanced that’s been in early access since July 21, 2026, pure mode is always on and can’t be turned off. On top of that, you can’t use graphics mods while early access lasts.

Our mods are made for FiveM Legacy. If you’re not sure which one you have, check the FiveM Legacy vs Enhanced guide.

Can I get banned because of pure mode?

Pure mode isn’t a ban. It just ignores your mods or warns you with an error that tells you which file you modified.

FiveM global bans are for external programs that inject into the game, and there’s no documented case of a global ban for visual or sound mods. Even so, every server has its own rules and can ban mods on its own terms. Respect them. You’ll find more answers in the FAQ.

What you won’t find here

We don’t explain how to get around pure mode, not here and not on the Discord. It’s a server rule: if you don’t like it, there are plenty of servers that allow mods.

If you’re not sure whether one of our packs is graphics or audio, or what to expect on a specific server, join the Discord and ask. We’ll tell you before you install it.

Stuck? On the Discord we help you install it and the files are ready for you.
